$$A Texas icehouse vibe with a Kansas City smoker
“A downtown Henderson revival reviving pitmaster Homer Ward's 1960s barbecue legacy.”
Expect smoked meats such as pulled pork and craft sides, plus cold beer and cocktails in a lively downtown room with patio seating and live music. It is closed Sunday and Monday.
Homer's carries forward the legacy of pitmaster Homer Ward, whose barbecue passion was lit around 1964 and passed down through the family, now reborn in the heart of downtown Henderson. It brings a more modern, full-bar approach to western-Kentucky smoked meats.
Regulars point to Pulled Pork Sandwich, Smoked Meat Plate, Craft Sides, and Ribs.
Homer's Barbecue is mid-range ($$).
Homer's Barbecue serves Western Kentucky barbecue — Western Kentucky barbecue is America's mutton country, centered on Owensboro, the self-proclaimed 'Barbecue Capital of the World' and home to the annual International Bar-B-Q Festival. Older sheep are slow-smoked over hickory coals in masonry pits until the dark, gamy meat turns tender, then chopped or sliced and mopped with a thin, tangy Worcestershire-and-vinegar black 'dip.' The other regional signature is burgoo, a thick, long-simmered stew of mutton and other meats with vegetables. Pork, chicken, and ribs round out the pits, but mutton and burgoo are what make this the most distinctive barbecue tradition in the country.
